iheartsl community blog: Bella's Prom Look by you.

We have finally reached the end of my little Twilightseries. I hope you all have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed putting it together! With just a little over 12 hours until the movie opens (squeals like a schoolgirl), it is time to meet our lead character, Bella Swan.

The author of the series, Stephanie Meyers, doesn’t go into too much detail of Bella’s appearance. She wanted it to be easier for the readers to step into the characters shoes. The description that she does give of Bella is that she is average height and weight, pale skin, and wide chocolate eyes. She has straight, dark brown hair and wears little make-up.

Choosing a shape for Bella was simple. Averie Larnia of Hourglass Shapesis also a fan of Twilight and made a dollarbie based on Bella as portrayed by Kristen Stewart in the movie. This is still available in store! I went with a skin from Rockberry’s Willowline again, because some of the make-up options were very low maintenance. The eyes are from Adam and EVE, called Turkish Delight. For the hair, I went with the Jessica style from ETD.

I chose to do two looks for Bella, the first being a casual look. For the second look, I really wanted to do Bella’s prom look, as that is an important scene in the book.

For the full outfit details on both Bella’s casual look and her prom look, please head on over to Retail Therapy! You’ll also find links to two songs from the movie’s soundtrack that remind me of Bella-both from Paramore.

Xoxo,

Gigs Shrugged: Minimum Wage and Unemployment

One can support minimum wages and still understand that they raise unemployment for those subject to them. It’s far from settled whether there is a net benefit or not, but it’s pretty much universally accepted that they do raise unemployment.

The easy proof is to consider a minimum wage of $50/hour. One consequence of this would be the near complete elimination of the entire retail employment sector. Automatic electronic clerks would be installed at every store to take money. The budget for technological improvements to self-service retail technology would be huge.

Obviously, employment is decreased as millions of positions are eliminated. Funding into technology to replace those positions, however, is massively increased. Engineers enjoy full employment, as do technicians to service these machines. These increases in high tech employment would not come close to offsetting the massive lower end job losses though. There would also be massive frictional losses as companies struggle to retool quickly. In the long run, there may even be a net gain to society, as new technologies to replace human workers are developed.

But one incontrovertible fact remains, the higher minimum wage caused higher unemployment. Not everyone can be an engineer or a highly skilled worker. Minimum wages have the strong potential to hurt the very people they are designed to help, eliminating their jobs, replacing them with machines. Something to consider the next time you pump your own gas (and pay yourself at the pump), use an ATM, or a self-service checkout at the grocery store.

Vint Falken: Google Lively shuts down December 31 2008

Starting December 31, 2008 Google’s Lively will be shut down. Rooms and avatars will not be available. Embedded rooms in blogs and other web pages will continue to show an image, but users will no longer be able to enter Lively rooms and interact. I hope nobody was planning on celebrating New Year’s Eve in Lively? ;)

From the Official Google Blog:

In July we launched Lively in Google Labs because we wanted users to be able to interact with their friends and express themselves online in new ways. Google has always been supportive of this kind of experimentation because we believe it’s the best way to create groundbreaking products that make a difference to people’s lives. But we’ve also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off.

That’s why, despite all the virtual high fives and creative rooms everyone has enjoyed in the last four and a half months, we’ve decided to shut Lively down at the end of the year. It has been a tough decision, but we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business. Lively.com will be discontinued at the end of December, and everyone who has worked on the project will then move on to other teams.

We’d encourage all Lively users to capture your hard work by taking videos and screenshots of your rooms. Thank you for sharing this experience with us. We’ve learned a lot about how users interact in rich social environments, and we hope you’ve enjoyed your time with Lively.

Posted by The Lively Team

I wonder, though luck for the content creators that started to spend a large amount of time experimenting with Google’s Lively? Wasn’t ‘Lively’ not err.. lively enough? Not enough interest as sex & flirting was not allowed in Lively? :D And err, is this one less competition for Second Life, or a large bunch of people that now will not get interested in the concept of ‘3D worlds’ in the first few years? :/

Hat Tip: via Kris Constellation, still alive! ;)

Metaverse Journal: Google Lively bites the dust

After less than five months, Google have pulled the plug on Lively.
In a fairly terse statement, no substantive reason is given for the axing beyond wanting to concentrate on “our core search, ads and apps business”.

It’s a quick demise for a virtual world that showed some initial promise. It did have its controversies over its [...]

Gigs Shrugged: My First Drama Response Blog Post!

While I’m not the least controversial character, I usually don’t embrace drama for drama’s sake. I want to post about my recent banning from SLU to clear the air about certain things though.

Cris was absolutely justified in banning me.

It’s only for a week.

The threads were as described, various extremely tasteless “parody threads”.

They were just parodies and I don’t really feel that way about any of the attacked groups.

At the time the “stupid libertarian” thread was building up, I was in bed with food poisoning. This much of it wasn’t Richie’s fault, but it did contribute to me flying off the handle, especially since I still felt pretty awful when I logged on.

As for why I did it, basically see Cale’s thread. It wasn’t just that a couple people were attacking me, more upsetting was that no one was particularly calling them on it. Cale sums up the situation nicely and I appreciate her being a rational voice. It means that much more because I know she rarely agrees with me. I do enjoy discussing politics with the majority of people on SLU, even if I only rarely get agreement.

See you all in a week or so.

Pandora Designs: new-promo

I have always used this blog to promote my products, mainly my awesome, incredible animation hug that can keep permissions from your friends so you don’t have to ask them again (publicity plug indeed).

New promo

But Ihave noticed that some friends don’t do that, probably due to a rotten, inefective moral system that keeps them from mixing business and the more deep products of their souls.

So, being the shameless entrepreneur I am (oooops, meaned selfless, sacrificed blogger), I have decided to start posting from time to time about friends’ business and, if I don’t get flooded, any reader who adds here a comment with a landmark (no demos, please, and only one link, or the spam filter will kill it).

I spent my longest time immersed in Second Life with the HEad Mounted Display yet, 10 hours. The full motion capture is not ready yet, but the head tracking works, so I am able to use the first person view and look around spaces in Second Life. For a first day long test, it went remarkably well. I spent a fair amount of time in the performance space, the model of the actual room I'm in. When I was eating dinner, Rubaiyat Shatner came to the door and said "knock, knock", which was funny. I had IM'ed him about chatting about the number of prims we can have in our space, because we're currently full. Ars Virtua granted us land...

posted by Azdel Slade on Seventh Eye using a blogHUD
blogHUD map and teleport permalink

eightbar: Google Lively set to shut december 31st

It is official Google have decided to close Lively at the end of the year. This will no doubt create a great deal of discussion about the future of the virtual world industry, maybe give some nay sayers some ammunition to be negative.
I do feel somewhat sad for those people that were the allowed developers and beta testers who created content, who spent time and effort making things and creating. They now have to make do with video and photos of their work.
Google does of course still have the mirror world Google Earth, which as I have said before we looked at a good few years ago when sat in the Wimbledon bunker and said “wouldn’t it be great to put the tennis scores and rallies on that”. Earth of course also has user created content, the 3d warehouse. It does not have the presence of other people as such.
Lively had the presence of other people, used a plugin in the browser but stuck to the room approach and only let a select few develop on it. This isolationism certainly stopped me from “having a tinker building things”. Yet the more open worlds, ones with UGC, with the ability to see the potential by using the creation tools, they are the effective ones.
Not everyone needs to build, but they do feel they need to have some sort of creative control over the world around them, or potential too. Its an important point and one we proved to ourselves on the Torque metaverse.
Anyway, well done to the Google Lively team for having a go, what you, and we have all learned can make the other worlds better.

Prokofy Neva: "Community Organizing"

Bam railing against evil self-interested entities like banks and utilities in his <del>commie</del> community organizing-days.

One of the fakest and most illegitimate things on two legs in our real life -- and by extension, our simulated life -- is "community organizing". It rarely involves anything like a real, large authentic community; it usually only involves something small *calling itself* "thecommunity". It is usually artificially induced from outside by those "who know better" and have a decided agenda, often hidden; it is usually funded by small groups with political ideologies and goals that they seek to cover with "community organizing" to get themselves legitimacy. Oh sure, you do find authentic community organizers who are not these things. Usually, you don't find them among politically aggressive people in Chicago who become president of the USA lol.

Many people never focused on what this "community" stuff meant until Barack Obama began batting around the term in a bid to get elected. It's one of the many demagogic things he said to get elected -- and we can see it worked. I was one of those who elected him.

But that hardly means I'm going to be uncritical, and of course I cast a very weather eye on all his leftwing associations, which do indeed, unequivocally, include at least one former Weatherman undergound violent radical and at least one Communist Party member who were, respectively, an acquaintance and a mentor. The milieu that Barack moved in consisted unabashedly of lefties, and especially lefties of the old Chicago type, who include radical Islamists like Farrakhan and Obama's old preacher, whom he denounced, and various Communists and socialists and "progressives" who deny they are technocommies like Lawrence Lessig.

Never forgot Obama's first words upon appearing in public after his election: "Helloooooo Chicago!" And Hellooooo Chicago, with all its radicals, is what we will be seeing for the next 4 years (along with the rewarmed Hillary moderates seeking payback time) -- you are warned.

So the first question you have to ask about the "community" that Obama was "organizing" is as follows: who paid? A private foundation or NGO? A storefront funded with a city grant in the Daly machine? Who? And...what was the community" Himself and other urban intellectuals with an agenda? Poor people who got services who may have been dependent on these storefronts? Who? Who and what was organized?

And...what does it mean to be a "community organizer"? Generally, community organizing is an activity that socialists, trade-unions of the socialist bent, and communists have used for as long as these movements have been in existence. The formula usually consists of an intellectual, usually urban, usually non-working class, adapting an extremist ideology of the left, socialism or communism, or even a milder variant thereof, and going out to "organize the People". These "People" are usually idealized within these ideologies as "the masses" who "need" organizing or "the downtrodden" or "the workers" -- who have always been a special object of paternalist obsession by communists and socialists who -- with few exceptions -- rarely did actual hard manual work. (I can think of the delightful editor of New Politics, Julius Jacobson, a Schachtmanite, who fought in the war and also used to work in old fashioned hot-type printing, for example).

Not surprisingly, Hamlet nee Linden Au is touting the concept, and pointing to Saul Linsky. Oh, dear. A Chicago leftie, author of Rules for Radicals and coiner of the term "Think Globally, Act Locally," whom Hamlet credits with [...]

Nexeus Fatale Website: Google Lively Closes on December 31st

Me hanging out in Google Lively

Lively was Google’s attempt in the creation of a browser based virtual world space (although there was still an application download) and will be closing on December 31st, 2008. Lively was an interesting product, but as designed its failure stems from it’s approach, Lively was built more as a 3D chatroom instead of a virtual world. Rooms were never connected to each other, there was never a sense of community or the ability to connect several rooms together in the creation of a larger space. Instead when filled a room became unorganized chaos as avatars would merge with one another.

Lively also suffered from several difficulties, it’s movement system was mouse based (and unintuitive), keeping up with conversations through a bubble like interface was annoying, is lacked audio streaming but had video and image streaming, and there were not any integrated tools to create items inside of Lively (let alone share them).

Lively’s approach of a virtual world is the wrong approach. It treated this space as an extension of a chatroom rather than the extension of the Internet. Where people could interact with one another not just through chat but through media. Lively was not the first virtual world of its kind and it will not be the last of its ilk to fall. I suspect other virtual worlds or flash based worlds will ultimately fail for many of the reasons Lively has.

Yesterday was MDR’s first anniversary. It’s been a year of growth, moving from a small beachfront studio to having an entire SIM full of photo opportunities and a three-story studio extraordinaire. Cajsa has been hard at work building and texturing things, and I have to say the place looks great. We’re having a party on Friday to celebrate a year of taking fabulous photos AND the grand opening of our new SIM, and I’ve been busy with the preparations for that. But I did take a few moments recently to enjoy some of the fall scenery around the grid before it all disappears and the snow starts showing up. It’s not been chilly enough for a coat yet, but this season definitely calls for longer sleeves. I decided to do some mixing and matching of old and new pieces to travel the grid in and I came up with some wonderfully fashionable looks.

Prokofy Neva: Forced Relocation

Anshe Chung is doing a pretty nasty and shitty thing -- in part out of spite, for which she/he is known, in part, out of economic necessity, which isn't pretty. I figured I could expect some retaliation for my criticism of Anshe Chung -- and I wasn't wrong.

The other day I get a notecard from one of the ever-changing ACS workers that in an effort to improve our Second Lives (har har, they pick up this kind of bullshit from the Lindens), we were now going to be forcibly relocated from our homes. Our existing home, on A'ksha Oasis, on a parcel with mountain, desert, and waterfront all in one -- quite unique -- bought more than three years ago, in June 2005, was to be forcibly moved to a neighbouring sim, whose name, A'ksha Mesa, sums up the problem: we were being moved from a beautiful mountain to a flatlands with textures nowhere as unique, and with no terraforming that was unique, as in A'ksha. (Customers are not allowed to terraform.)

Why? Well, there wasn't an immediately obvious reason at all, but I think the way it is being justified (so as not to look as if it is outright retaliation, which of course it is) is that the sims need to be "consolidated". After a neighbour moved out, a huge parcel on the sim went up for sale, at the usual high ACS price (other private islands have moved to $1/m sales, or even $0/sales, with merely tier up front, let's say. Not ACS, which collects both a hefty sale price AND the tier up front, and charges top dollar for the tier, too. I was paying US $29 tier to hold 5120 m2.

Meanwhile, on this A'ksha Mesa, virtually the entire sim, divided up into about 6 parcels, was for sale, covered in yellow, and had been in yellow for ages. So there's the problem: two neighbouring sims, formerly a beautifully landscaped area of some 4 or 6 desert sims making up a fabulous landscape, that simply can't sell. It always had a very hard time selling, because people are afraid of hills; they are afraid their tacky prefabs can't fit on them, they can't figure out how to build or place a house, so they shy away from them. They want flat pancakes where the house instantly fits. Sad, but there it is.

So in order to solve the yellow problem which was dragging on for months, ACS decided to turn two sims into one, dumping off the few people left in the one on to the other. In order to get rid of more yellow, ACS said they'd offer people to acquire more land on that new sim for $0/m cost (as a special favour to offset the sudden forced relocations with 2 weeks notice, although $0/m sale is the NORM on most other islands these days), but of course, paying the higher tier. There was no offer to terraform roughly the equivalent sim. Given that A'ksha had flatlands on it, there was no offer to move the one person on flat A'ksha Mesa over to the flat land of A'ksha; instead, the mountain dwellers of A'ksha Oasis (I have 4 people in the group now) were the ones to be shaken loose.

And there was no offer not to have any relocation at all, but to acquire the land on the sim for $0 to solve the problem, to work together to solve the sales problem. $0/m sale land on that sim probably would have cleaned up the yellow -- I personally would pay tier, but won't pay $61,000 Lindens to buy land.

Oh, and because ACS abolished parcelling, and like the Lindens in Nautilus, no longer allow parcelling on your holding, that meant my tenants in the group could no longer have separate parcels to have separate ban lists and URLs with music. A killer blow to a rentals, of course, which was the idea. Because those of us who bought in 2005 had been allowed parcels, I could get it grandfathered; with the forced [...]

Your2ndPlace.com: The Grid takes shape

There is a fascinating interview over at Dusan Writer's metaverse with Justin Bovington of Rivers Run Red regarding immersive workspaces. Second Life in a box is selling itself to a business near you.

When I was a lad Catherine Linden used to do office hours. I liked Catherine, she was a marketing person who came across as a shoe shopper. I wonder what they did with her? I hope she's not buried in the basement! Anyway, later meetings with Catherine kept talking about "The Grid". Straight away I saw this as a different angle and a different direction. I still do, the Second Life world we all know and love is a different beast.

I find it interesting that Rivers Run Red aren't doing any work on what we call the main grid...they call it the main grid too. However their primary focus these days is behind closed doors. NDA signed closed doors too as they won't talk about it.

This brings me back to the 9th July where I noted on twitter: "There's no longevity in the Second Life main grid virtual world, the technology may last but the main grid is doomed."

I'm not quite as gloomy as I was then and I can't remember why I felt that gloomy back then but I do envisage Linden Lab being more interested in the immersive workspaces angle than they are in the main grid angle. I can see the main grid being passed around to willing third parties and having a tie in with evolving Second Life technology. Alternatively Linden Lab could create subdivisions whereby a new company under the umbrella name of Linden Lab look after our world and they get on with this grid business of selling immersive workspaces type deals.
{ Read more }

Sometimes I buy impractical things that I do not need for any reason.

Such as dresses composed entirely of sequins. I gotta confess when I saw this dress at Dolly Rock I truly had to run over and pick it up. It’s just such an OUT THERE dress…….cut down to THERE…..tight all around THERE…….with fun photosourced sequin texturing all over.

From Harper B:

To my friends:

As you know, Eshi Otawara is still pending notification about her status in the US. While recent news has been positive for her, things are not as good for all widows of American citizens.

Brent Renison is a lawyer fighting the Widow Penalty in the US. Eshi contacted Brent a few months ago, and he agreed to help her with her case. Brent is also in contact with our mutual friend, Mike. Mike forwarded this letter to me and asked me to forward it on behalf of Eshi and the other widows who have been unfairly penalized because their American spouses died before they were able to get a fair hearing.

Please join us in assisting Brent and Eshi in this cause. Click through to the website, read about, consider if it is something you support, and contact your legislator.

Thanks for your time.

Harper Beresford

Subject: 60 Minutes Exposes Widow Penalty - from Brent Renison

Hello,

I promised to let everyone know when I would appear on CBS 60 Minutes. The time has come. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Bob Simon, the most honored journalist in international reporting, will expose the “Widow Penalty” to the nation this Sunday night , November 23rd on CBS 60 Minutes.

America is deporting widows of American citizens automatically and without appeal when their spouse dies during bureaucratic processing of the green card application.

My sincerest desire is that, after watching the broadcast, Monday morning you will do something about this terrible practice. There are a number of ways you can help to end the widow penalty. The most important is to tell your elected officials that a change must occur in the abysmal way that we treat widows of American citizens. Whether you effect a change in the way the current or future Administration handles the cases, or push through a legislative amendment signed by the President, this practice must stop. Click on the box to find out how you can help.

http://www.ssad.org/takeaction.html

Please be a part of that change on Monday morning, and please forward this email to just one person whom you trust to do the right thing. Forward to more than one person at a time, and accountability is lost – people will delete the email, just as you might delete mine.

Brent Renison

Barring any further "improvements" by Propsero and his band of merry gridmonkeys this afternoon, I should be disgracing Lauren Weyland's stage tonight sometime aftter at 4:30PM SLT.

Tonight's tale may seem similar to one that was posted on a certain D-list blog out there because, well, it will be.

However, I think you'll want to get the full impact of the piece with the voice of the author pretending to be Tom Waits.

Werbach, as it turns out, is a World of Warcraft player, according to Wagner James Au at GigaOM.

Werbach has written about MMOs on his blog (back in 2006), that games "provide an incentive for people to develop new software and ideas for collaborative production. Many of those ideas will translate to other group activities, including those within the business world. I think MMOGs will be, at minimum, a significant testbed for these new technologies, because users see a direct benefit and are willing to experiment with new things." Werbach plays in two WoW guilds, one started by a friend, and the other is comprised of academics whose interests or work focus on virtual worlds.

While Werbach is more of a traditional MMO gamer, Crawford is a fan of Second Life, judging by what she's written on the virtual world in the past on her blog.
Prokofy Neva: Traffic

Yesterday the Concierge list was disrupted once again with fights as somebody began spreading the rumour about the Lindens removing traffic. I don't think they are actually doing that now, but I did forget to put it on my "What Next?" list -- they will do it, if they feel enough pressure, or if they are simply feeling destructive enough toward the inworld economy.

The usual suspects lined up to denounce traffic and call furiously for it to be removed. They cited the usual arguments:

o bots, which are being used as traffic infusers and which steal resources and aggravate everybody
o they don't need traffic, they have word-of-mouth sales
o people who need traffic for sales are losers; other people should realize traffic doesn't give them sales
o people who hate bots are necessarily driven to use them to compete with others who do, so they want traffic to be removed, so they don't have to do this
o if you need to watch your traffic, get a script to follow not only footfalls but hotspots, length of stay, etc. and get more useful metrics

Most of the people screeching about the removal of traffic are people with clubs or malls reluctantly using bots in order to keep up with other people who happily use bots. The remainder of haters are usually a certain brand of geek who wants bots used for science, but not commerce. That's where there is so much anger and hatred tied up into it -- people don't see the solution is to remove the bots, they want the traffic that the bots are generating to be removed instead.

I cite the usual arguments *for* traffic based on my vast experience of what works for people who rent my land for stores:

o search/places plus ordering by traffic is the single greatest engine of sales in SL, bar none
o people with word-of-mouth sales don't understand this and will never understand it; new people can't get WOM and they need other means to get started, sometimes for a year
o bots should be regulated by charging for any account using them, and labelling such accounts -- that will decimate them overnight
o once you get past the few gamed positions on highly-used search words, you see a merited traffic ordering, and that is used for sales, sales, sales -- this is definitely what shoppers use
o I personally do not use bots, campers, or any gimmicks of any nature, and in fact I benefit from placement by *other* means the Lindens have tweaked in "search all," and have lower placement in "search places".

This debate will never get anywhere, and is at a standstill as usual, but unfortunately, some new voices are weighing in on it now. Simone Stern, who is someone who has no need of traffic whatsoever, as she is a top brand in SL, is now denouncing traffic. Before, I noticed she didn't really comment; now she is.

Simone has always been a friend, and a former tenant, who I know for a fact didn't use traffic gimmicks because I don't allow them. She did for a time, like many of us, use camping on her main store, but not for long -- it was a needless expense and she had sales anyway. Somehow, we got into a wrangle about this as she claims it was merely an experiment by a manager for a day, but I recollect it differently as longer. No matter. Simone has traffic in the 2000s, which is in fact all you need to get sales paying rent/tier. And she has sales at outlets all over SL, and people buy on SLboutique.com of course. And she gets her sales by having mammoth word of mouth from a huge customer base, and from her coverage in RL media. God bless her, she deserves every inch of coverage she gets -- and then some. Her work for the Electric Sheep and other providers has also put her into high visibility -- and she deserves it. Now we just need her to realize that not everyone can use those formulas of high visibility, for which there is only a few slots available.

That's what I just plain don't get about [...]

M is for Myg: What may come

He wanted to take me to this place I’d never seen before. “It’s beautiful,” he said, and it was.

It’s La Reve, in case you’ve never been there.

I was looking through my photostream and thinking about how baby-related/pregnancy RL photos are sneaking their way into it and how our lives are sort of morphing now too. This night - it was Halloween, actually - was the last time we just sort of hung out and explored together in SL. He goes in a lot more than I do these days but I think that’s just because I’m a lot more uncomfortable (physically) which makes everything more difficult.

I realize that all the same it’s a lot easier to explore in SL now than outside of it. But I don’t even know where to go anymore.

Suggestions are welcome!

(And I’m sorry but I had to change commenting policy because spammers were killing me. Even Aksimet wasn’t catching enough of them and several spam comments made it here a day. I apologize if it takes a little while for your comment to show, but promise unless you leave a comment that says something like “Pills! Vegas! Shoes! ?????????” it’ll show here!)

This is my friend Ashok — he owns the aptly titled and fantastic Marindian restaurant called Avatars. Every year, he has a celebration at 2656 Bridgeway in Sausalito where he serves a fantastic dinner to as many people as possible on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. For FREE. From 4 PM to 10 PM. Yesterday he told me I couldn’t come unless I brought at least 20 people. This is his way of saying “Thanks”. I think its a beautiful idea — I will be there with my family. Please twitter this and help me out. Last year he served 1100 people.

A brief disruption of website activity may be to blame for yesterday's light volume. VSTEX has begun to take extensive and innovative efforts to increase share volume, including discounts for the 20 most active traders, and discounts for listed companies who increase their volume.

Only one pencil can be removed at a time, it is then sharpened back into the box causing the sharpenings to occupy the space of the used pencils. The results are unnervingly realistic with eyes, lips and other details constructed out of cashews, raisins and the like. A lack of hair and blood-like glazes make the work all the more creepy. Sold at his family's bakery in Ratchaburi, Thailand, he displays the parts wrapped like food in plastic and hung from meat hooks. Apparently, the art is in fact edible and tastes like regular bread.
[ Source: http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2008/08/kittiwat_unarro.php ]

September was not a good month by these metrics, and we were interested to see how October panned out.

Your key takeaways for October are a continuing plunge in premium accounts, and a reduction in overall economic activity. User hours, however were up.
Tao Takashi: Obama’s FCC Transition Team to have virtual worlds experts on it

As BoingBoing reports (via James Wagner Au, a journalist well known for his insights into virtual worlds), the FCC transition team has Kevin Werbach and Susan Crawford on it. Kevin seems to be a passionate WoW-player and Susan Crawford knows her way around in Second Life (as does Cory Doctorow, btw).

Of course they also have expertise in many different areas of technology but to have knowledge in these areas as well - something which is already or will be a big part of our future life - is a very good thing to have.

German politicians OTOH are still trying to understand the basics of the internet and by doing so “accidently” shutting down wikipedia.de.
Crap in the morning: Wacky

There's one one word I can use to describe Second Question: wacky.

At first, I didn't understand the show. Wrote it off.

Then, as I applied Lincoln aphorism "I don't like that man. I should get to know him better." I started to understand the chemistry that Pooky and Hydra have.

And it works.

The show's format connects and involves the audience a lot better than another in-world show that I used to infest. You're not just sitting and providing avatar-ballast for pretty scenery, typing OOOH and YAY and WOW every few minutes, clicking Applause like a trained seal.

Hey, if that floats your boat, well, paddle your dingy to that tidepool and have a ball.

I think this is a lot more fun to watch... and avatar-watch, too.

Although I probably need to stop answering so many of the trivia questions openly. Better to just sit back and enjoy the banter, the guests, and the general craziness.

And get more snapshots, too.

Crap in the morning: Meta Makeover

Yeah, I'm a 7Seas fishing addict. About to break 40,000xp in my quest to reach the Hall Of Fame.

So when the 7Seas folks were scheduled to appear on MetaMakeover, I had to go to the studio to get the exclusive fishy they are giving away for the viewers.

No, not a Saffia Widdershins fishy.

Ever wonder about the font for the signs?

Seven's badge should be a clue where it comes from.

Got a chuckle from the "They're not a married couple... they're brother and sister."

The interview will "air" next week... check SLCN for times, eh.

Okay, so SecondLie answered reader mail for Avastar and the new issue... THUD they collapsed.

Keep an eye on Prim Perfect Magazine's blog for a special announcement about that microblogging miscreant's newest gig.

Hopefully, Saffia doesn't watch her empire crumble like AvaStar did. Saffia's good folks.

Metaverse Journal: Australian politics and virtual worlds - no momentum

It’s coming up to a year since the change of Federal government in Australia. In Second Life, there was an election night party.

At the time there was lots of excited talk about the ALP’s broadband policy and the promise it may bring - there is progress on that front but it’s fraught with problems. Then [...]

Second Life Herald: Nightflower -- Post 6 Grrrl

[Nightflower - a girl and her dream. The Night Flower sim hosts some of SL's finest photo art by some of SL's most creative artists. The paint on the walls was still fresh, meaning some of the prims were still untextured when I met Nightflower there for our photo shoot. Is there any better place to take pictures than a gallery? This woman is spontaneous, chaotic, loveable and a wonderful and eloquent writer whose blog www.nightflowerblossoming.typepad.com I have been following for quite some time. Her friends dropping snotty remarks while she was dropping her clothes were no big help but they are as much part of her life as creativity and open-mindedness. – Bunny Brickworks]

They stared out at me from the pages of the crumpled in-flight magazine: a digital Ken and Barbie, swirling across an otherworldly dance floor awash in firefly lights. The article told of a fantastical alternate reality, populated by personalities both magical and garish, a world willed into existence through the creativity of its citizens.

This wasn't just a computer game, the story continued, but a place where you could do and be whatever you could imagine, giving birth to a totally new you in a safely anonymous place of limitless options. Even the name left me breathless with promise – Second Life.

Three hours later, dream smashed headlong against reality. I couldn't seem to fly in a straight line, couldn't figure out how to drive the damn car, and somehow managed to attach the torch to my head. I walked like a duck, stood like a man at a urinal, and couldn't stop jerking my head around like someone tracking the flight path of a troublesome insect. I remember standing there in those stonewashed blue jeans and that ubiquitous purple long-sleeved tee, feeling like I'd really been sold a bill of goods.

<img alt="Nightflower02" title="Nightflower02" src
