Massively: Futurist Ray Kurzweil to deliver SLCC 2009 keynote

Some consider him a kook or an eccentric, while others think of him as a technological visionary. Either way, the accomplished Raymond Kurzweil will be taking the stage to keynote the Second Life Community Convention in San Francisco next month, a spot traditionally afforded to a Linden Lab executive.

Kurzweil, a famous futurist, author and inventor, is notable for his many inventions (from the first CCD-based flat-bed scanner to reading machines for the blind), his notions about transhumanism and technological singularities and a significant number of awards and honorary degrees. He has strong opinions on virtual environments, and it will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

The Second Life Community Convention 2009 will happen in San Francisco, on August 13th - 16th, 2009 at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. Registration for the event is open and attendees can register at the convention's Web-site.

I could not decide what was the best way to show off the Exodi skin I picked up the other day right after the 50% off sale started. I mean, it’s so extreme and colorful – I wanted fun and festive. This Fedora hat and mystic bob seemed to be the perfect way to show you the colors.

I’m actually quite enamored of this hair color – I have to slide over to Argrace and see what else they have.

As the name suggests, ~*Forest Floor*~ Gardens and Dreamscapes evokes a fantasy feel from the moment you arrive. Lush green grass, colorful flowers, and mature trees are growing within a border of moss-covered stone arches, suspended in mid-air by thick metal chains. The vibrant garden plots are bordered with fantastic trees that can be changed to match the seasons with a touch. Right near the landing point for the gardens check out some wonderfully detailed bonsai, bringing a bit of forest to any size home for just two prims.

To find the featured item, you need to teleport down to Port Amaranthine. There is a swirling purple portal in the gardens which will transport you safely down to a region within Winterfell. Here, Uni Ninetails has a flower stand, a lucky chair, and some stores featuring home and garden furniture. In one of the grassy squares within the sim, you’ll see the featured item on display. Check in one of the small shops to find the listing of the prim counts for Garden Furniture Set 3. Total it up and write it down as part of your entry in the treasure hunt competition.

So I went to check on the hunger striker at the Linden Estate Services building and she's gone! I mean there's no sign of her, has she been abducted by the forces of corruption? Has she simply turned herself invisible or did she have to go to bed? Who knows!

Guest post – The Style of Argrace

**The following is a guest post written by my friend, and MDR co-owner, Rhodesy Durant. I often seek Rhodesy’s opinion before purchasing certain things, so I was delighted when she decided to take me up on the offer of doing a guest post. I’m sure you will love her look as much as I do.**

Having known Arcadia Nightfire since her first moments in SL, I am no stranger to the concept of fashion blogging. I watch her put together outfits and then go on to describe them for the fashion conscious to absorb. I’ve watched her both fret at trying to get an outfit just right and squeal with glee when an outfit just falls together with no effort at all. She is my partner in crime when it comes to shopping, so we visit a lot of the same stores. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise you that we went to Hair Fair together on more than one occassion to make sure we’d seen it all.

Because of lag, we both snagged demos to try on back at the studio. Being Durannies, we both have soft spots for Fedoras but when I spotted Agrace’s store full of them, I decided to pass because they came in all natural hair colors and not my favored purple. However, when Arcadia tried on one of the demos, I was hooked; I ran to their main store in hopes of avoiding the Hair Fair lag, but was unable to snag this divine creation. But what a TREAT I discovered! I was delighted to find a whole line of gorgeous hair and even better: clothing that made my inner preppy melt!

Agrace seems to dabble in a little bit of everything—furniture, jewelry, hair, clothing (for men & women), and eyes. I didn’t want to leave the store! Lindens have been a smidge tight lately, but when I saw this Natural top for ladies in the sensational royal purple satin, I didn’t even think about the Lindens. I just clicked buy! Once I put it on, all of Arcadia’s offers to allow me the occasional “guest blog” spot on Fashion 360° became mandatory. I had to share this with her readers… or maybe I’m just that vain, and I couldn’t resist showing off.

I personally love Second Life™ voice. Afterall, it saves me so much typing that I genuinely believe my chances of ever getting repetive action induced arthritis in my fingers are substantially reduced. Well. Maybe. Anyway, that isn’t the point. I love voice because it enables you to relate to people on a more personal and genuine level. Ok, so cue all the anti-voicers complaining that it excludes the deaf or that it’s unreliable and so on. Myself, I find SL voice to be just as reliable as Skype or any other VOIP service. And while I can appreciate that the deaf may feel excluded by voice in world, anyone with an ounce of consideration, myself included, would type for the benefit of those in that situation.

But anyway, I’m not writing to debate the pros and cons of voice in virtual worlds. I love it. You won’t change my mind. What I don’t like, however, are those who are incapable of using their microphones. It is not rocket science, is it? Switch on, don’t swallow it, mute when belching. It’s simple…. you would think.

In particular this is a problem at voice events, such as stand up comedy, spoken word and poetry events or staged plays. So here we have it, the biggest mic faux-pas!

1. The Love Poem… Interrupted

Shall I compare thee to a…… giant belch? It doesn’t matter how talented you are. It doesn’t matter how beautiful your imagery is. It really is irrelevant just how much emotion you packed into that poetic masterpiece of yours. When you belch it, it’s hideous. And this doesn’t just apply to readers of poetry. It applies to everyone. Belching down the microphone deliberately? Really? For the ‘isn’t it funny when I belch?’ types, I suggest www.virtualkindergarten.com/stopbeingsofrikkinsick. Yes, farting down the mic is disgusting too. Really… grow up. Get some decorum.

2. The One That Nobody Heard

Leaving your microphone on the next continent means that nobody can hear you, no matter how high they turn up their volume. JUST PUT THE MIC CLOSER TO YOUR BLOODY MOUTH!

3. Whoah, Not THAT Close!

You might have the best microphone in the world, but my guess is that it doesn’t taste so great. And I’m thinking nobody else particularly wants to hear you attempt to swallow it. And here’s a hint, you probably don’t need to scream down the microphone. We have headsets too. You don’t need to rely on the wind to carry your message across the Atlantic.

4. Not Suitable For Everyone

Some things really ought to be kept to a private voice call. Some seem to fail to realise that everyone around you on the spatial voice channel can hear you. And certain more intimate moments really should not be shared. There is no need to tell the entire of the store you are in what you want her to do with her nipples. By the same token she really needn’t tell half of that PG welcome area where she wants you to put your tongue. PRIVATE CALL, PEOPLE!

5. Ouch!

Static hurts. It’s that simple. If your mic is broken, if it crackles, if it screams, if it whirrs… if people constantly tell you your micrphone hurts their ears, don’t use it. Give your work to someone else to read and please just type. It’s the Second Life equivalent to standing next to someone and repeatedly hitting them across the face with a heavy, blunt object.

6. The Time To Mute

If someone else is reading or performing, why is there always one person who insists upon having their mic on hands free in order that, as well as the performed, we can hear said audience member’s children, dogs, husband, breathing and [...]

Having read Zoe Connolly’s blog about fictional influences I gave it some thought. Here are a few who influenced me:

Diahann Carroll from the series “Julia“. She was a very attractive and I think GoSpeed most looks like her.

Then there was Marla Gibbs who was most well known as the cheeky maid Florence Johnston from The Jeffersons TV series. While not as sarcastic as Florence was Go is a little outspoken and not very politically correct.

In a rather bizarre Jack Linden office hour the Freedom for Robo front accused the G-team of corruption, accused Linden Lab of following a socialist doctrine, threw in the word "communist" a lot and to put the icing on the cake one of them is conducting a hunger strike in support of Robo in the lobby of the Linden estate services building, I'm not making this up! How long they remain there is another issue but we were invited to pop by during the week amid claims that they will still be there at the same bat time on the same bat channel next week.

From the sidelines someone asked "Who is Robo Marx?" which generated many answers, some suggesting he's the messiah... he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy. Attempts to raise Robo from the dead put him more in the Ra Ra Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine category. I can picture it now, ten years from now in SL Che Guevara T-Shirts will have been replaced with Robo Marx T-Shirts, the great freedom fighter struck down by the establishment.

I thought it was just in the UK that we were experiencing summer madness due to the heat, seriously, two days of being in serious Betty Swollocks territory does strange things to one.

Meanwhile Jack promised that more waterfront land will be available in Zindra. The mess that is the adult content policy just gets murkier, already people are getting rather irked that so and so got a waterfront parcel when previously they had an empty parcel/no adult content/ they're fic/ Linden alts. Really, is everyone going off their rocker?

Bevor ich zu Storm Schmooz und seinem Label komme:

Bald kommt die neue “Stiletto Moody”-Kollektion raus.

Eine neue Sim wurde an die Stiletto Moody-Sim angedockt – der Shop wird gerade umgebaut und man kann erwarten, dass er demnächst mit großem Getöse in allen Blogs, einem Sale und den neuen Schuhen (zum normalen Preis) eröffnet wird. Auf dem Sektor der “orthopädischen” Schuhe samt Fußprothesen (sorry, aber ich nenne das nunmal so) ist Stiletto Moody an der qualitativ einsamen – vor allem preislichen – Spitze. Ohne Frage.

Auf dem Sektor der gesculpteten Schuhe ohne eingebautem Fuß ist es Storm Schmooz, der die Spitze anführt. Form und Texturen sind klassisch, schön und sehr realistisch. Die Schuhe sind wirklich eine besondere Klasse für sich.

Hier sind zwei meiner Lieblingsmodelle.

Last night I attended AcousticEnergy Nitely's show at The Fellowship of The Unashamed Pavilian in Meldenrake.

It's the first Christian show I've attended in SL and I got two things out of it:

(1) AE does wonderful things with worship music.

(2) I want to find out more about The Fellowship of the Unashamed, so I'll be exploring their area.

I wish I could have stayed for the whole show, but what I did hear was wonderful.

“Slow Kitchen” hat das “Nase pudern”-AFK-Tool.

Auf der Außenseite des Puderdosendeckels steht “AFK” und du beginnst, nachdem du Dose und Puderquaste angezogen hast, gründlich-konzentriert dein Make up zu überprüfen und auszubessern.

Das Set ist in einem Paket mit zwei anderen AFK-Tools. Die beiden anderen sind auch süß und der Paketpreis von 100 L$ macht das Ganze zu einer erschwinglichen Sache. Alternativ kann man sich auch an den Lucky chair stellen und warten, bis das Glück einem eins der drei Tools ins Inventar spült.

As a newer Rezzable blogger, I've heard lots of excited talk about the upcoming Swansong fashion event, but I didn't actually know much about it. It was just a place that had clothes for sale, right? I was told that I had to go see what all the fuss was about for myself, with a foot planted firmly on my butt by Lokum and Winter. So I dressed myself in my favourite dress from the previous Black Swan show "Winter Magic" - the Florencia by Ghanima Uriza of ++Blue Blood++ and the Wrapped Hair which Helena Stringer made, and I went on an odyssey of the avian kind.

SL is much like playing digital barbies in a lot of ways. We can buy tons of outfits, shapes, and hair. We can setup dream houses and fly around in jets. My inventory is chock full of accessories. So many shoes, jewels, and outfits that would make a seven year old green with envy. Even with all that loot, I was fighting the weekend blah. My friends were uber busy, I had conquered the hair fair lag, been to SL6B, the RL weather was lousy, and there was nothing on the TV. So in an effort to shake things up, it was time for another experiment: a significant and drastic change. Enter December Immortal Barbie...I mean avatar.

Hello Today’s outfit its more complicated to write about then normal because I made some modifications to it. Skirt is part of the dress from Zaara but what i did with it – I copy prim part and I attached it again under the first layer and I added green color to it plus I made in transparent and less fexi . I couldn’t look at myself walking with this skirt up in the air all the time so I made the under layer. Rest its simple i got this fab Lamb Hair from HF other day. Im a Huge fan of lamb from the Day ONe. Top is from Apple May store and it have amazing colour and a little vintage feel. I pick up my favourite leggings from MAiiKI and I team them up with lovely Pumps from Armidi (btw I miss Armidi I want them to release something new soon).

I got league skin some time ago and this is my favourite skin in my inventory from the dark tones and I thought I will be wearing it all the time… but this JM Mai Devonz skin! I cant stop wearing it, and its my new addiction. This skin (in my head) just works so well with retro and vintage style and I am so into it lately!

Why do I look so quizzical…because Lauren frequently caught me off guard with some very bizarre comments…all in good fun. Thanks SuperDave for filming up our skirts! sigh when will sculptie flexies come in…for dresses.

We we certainly went from one extreme to the other this week…Im not sure if the show was really all that well planned looking back, we took a bit of a risk putting comedy and Nuclear disaster all in one show….but if we wanted to shock people we may have done that!

Firstly the Chernobyl Exhibit in SL, which shows some really incredible scenes which looked strangely like some SL sims I’ve been to, in that they look surreal! but are very real. Ingeborg Apfellbaum, was a wonderfull guest taking us through a very personal journey of Chernobyl and what its like there today…

Then for a 360 change of pace, after being really confronted with Nuclear Meltdown, we had a Nuclear personality! in Lauren Wayland! the very first Stand up comedienne in SL. As it was our first time showcasing a Comedian I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, I think next time we either find a really fantastic laugh track or just let the audience open their voice mics and see what happens! I thank Lauren for letting us experiment on her! in the nicest possible way.

Finally we had Ms Phaylen Fairchild, Film Maker and organizer of this years SL6B, I had so much fun talking to her, about her shows! Phay and I are freinds in SL, and our usual conversations go for about 2 hours…so 10 mins was really tough! You wait till you hear what she has coming up next!!!!

The After show chat was really funny really funny….and even Ingeborg joined in!

We should have filmed that, there were some lines that came out of that, that I wish I could replay over and over, and not from me! I haven’t had a down on the floor belly laugh like that since my husband asked me to cut up my credit card…

No seriously Lauren and Phaylene on the same show together! it doesn’t get much better, I only wish Phay was coming to SLCC I’d love to see the 2 of them doing a routine on stage …of sorts…him..

Das “Khitten Kurka is my muse”-Dress gibt es heute kostenlos bei “Wetherby’s”.

Das Oberteil ist in Falten gelegt (sieht besonders am Rücken schön aus) und der Gürtel ist mit großen Edelsteinen besetzt.

Der Systemrock sitzt super.

Passende Schuhe und Clutch gibt’s für wenig Geld dazu zu kaufen.
