The growing mindmap…

(picture: a live videostreaming session with the new media expert Mal Burns. Somehow I think that the combination of streaming video and chat offers more possibilities for media targeting larger communities than virtual environments, but both technologies have a role to play)

I just posted about mindmapping real time possibilities for bloggers and journalists, and yes, it happened: some friendly soul(s) indicated relations and added nodes to my very sketchy mindmap. Thank you for this intervention!

Additions include nodes about streaming audio (I keep forgetting about that, not sure why), and additional nodes about everywhere. It is evident that the helping hands involved here are knowledgeable in virtual worlds, as a distinction is made between mirror worlds and original worlds.

This makes me wonder how far we should go in pointing out possibilities in this specific context – or in other words, which possibilities are realistic? I did use Second Life myself for a meeting of a team of bloggers on our newspaper site, and it went fine. For our daily chat sessions, attended by hundreds and sometimes a few thousand people (often participating from behind firewalls), I would not use it. I guess the same could be said for other virtual solutions such as Open Sim.

What about Blue Mars, a virtual world with great graphics but even higher hardware requirements than Second Life? I’m afraid those requirements would exclude too many people, so for now, I would not include it in a list for news outlets – or am I too restrictive here? Another issue is whether the community accepts virtual meetings. In the case of my business newspaper, people participate in chat sessions, but it seems very important that they can do so with no hassle at all, from behind corporate firewalls.

I have less doubts in fact, no doubts) about the possibilities of classical text chat and the combination of text chat and streaming video – as demonstrated by our friend Mal Burns (see picture). I would recommend every journalist and blogger interested in new media developments to participate in Second Life groups such as We Are the Network and Metanomics – not in order to invite in the entire newspaper, radio or blog community, but in order to discover the many cutting edge social media applications virtual worlds people love to use. With some luck, those friendly people will even help you with a mindmap…

Oh man, when I heard about them… I got all excited. When I saw them, I nearly asploded! Urbanity has released a new skin line, Cute as a Button, and I got my hands on a pack to give you a peek!

The skin comes in 4 different skin tones. Each skin tone then comes in 7 different makeups! Each makeup then comes in 2 different versions, a freckled, and a nonfreckled face.

I LOVE THEM!

Ok… now look close and see if you can guess my FAVORITE addition to the skin… closer… closer… keep looking… thats right! Those darn dimples… right there on either side of the mouth, they are way too cute. I guess thats part of how they got the name eh?

The lips are all very natural and glossed, and the eyelids are very detailed, a nice addition to an already nice skin. The brows are another thing I truly love about it, they aren’t too thin, and aren’t too thick… they are perfectly waxed… something I have come to appreciate.

I had no trouble adjusting my shape to fit the skin to my liking, and the skins come with a shape for those more mod challenged.

Long story short, go grab a demo or two and try before you buy… but definitely buy. <3

And women too I suppose…
I’ve wanted to do a man post for a while now… but… I’m lazy and didn’t feel like converting Shay to a man, or buying all new shit for an alt. Thus cue grabbing the guy friends. Since I’m uber picky, it narrowed it down to a few, and knowing Mac here (Mac Heron) has a flair for fashion (when I say flair I should specify he is straight, and taken, sorry ladies and gents) , along with much of the grids top designs it was a no brainer. Thanks to him for putting up with me long enough to get these shots! <3

What made this shoot so easy, is that when Mac showed up… he was ready, I didn’t have to change anything! Men with fashion sense are so underrated on the grid!

The first thing I’d really like to point out with Mac’s look, is his skin. AtomicBambi recently released a line of man skins, and I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised. The moment I saw them I knew I wanted to blog them one way or another. Lucky for me Mac already had one, so I didnt have convince him to spend precious L. The skins are really well made, and not too pretty boy like many male skins out there. They have a very natural shading to them, I did my best to show some angles here. The skin is a bargain, with 8 versions per pack, combinations of bald, hair base , freckles, and body hair.

Another thing… his shirt. The first thing I commented on when he arrived. If this would fit me well, I’d so wear it. Erm… but for you manly men it’s still way manly enough for you and you can ignore that a chic just said she’d wear it… kkthnx. It is very well made though, and the shading is perfect. With sculpted stomach and collar (also sleeves which aren’t shown in this picture), it’s one of the nicest guy pieces I’ve seen in some time.

As for the rest, we’ll skip ahead and let you take a look for yourself.

My prim miserliness continues, with my focus now on the fishing dock in the SE corner of the park. Yeah, there's that skating ice still there. Hope wanted to keep the skating going for as long as possible, so I haven't pulled it up yet. When it comes up, I figure I'll be spending 4 or 5 prims on reeds. However, there's still the matter of those deckchairs, which are 3 prims each. 12 prims for seating a whole lot of nobody, but I don't want to remove it completely. (I don't have any idea what I'd want to put there if I cleared it all, eh. So, I'm going to pull those up and put in just a pair of sculpty-benches. Savings of 10 prims. The steps from the ground to the deck can be turned into sculpties... savings of 2 prims there. Tried to turn the spiral steps into sculpties, but didn't quite work out. Oh well. Would have saved a dozen with that. And a lot for Hope, too. (Will keep that on my to-do list.) Since I never run any tournaments, there's no point to putting out the scoreboard. Probably no point to the vendor, either, but I'll leave it there for convenience's sake. (Unless I just want to put out the 1-prim news sign and let that designate the fishing area.) The junkpile out there, up against the road berm, that's a matter of pride. Yes, you heard it right... I've always had a junkpile somewhere to remind me of the heady building days. (I really need to put some ferns and weeds there to fill out the nastiness.)

The 2500 prim skeleton

Approximately 2500 prims were used for the huge Leviathan skeleton on the new Ahab's Haunt sim. Of those 2500 prims, quite literally only a handful are sculpts. All the other prims are regular prims. Not a single prim I found is larger than 10x10x10 meters or - in other words - this humongous build was constructed without a single megaprim.

The skeleton was built by "moles" - content creators contracted by Linden Lab. It is a safe assumption that the moles know what megaprims are, and how to use them. At the same time finding a Linden build (or Linden contracted build) that uses megaprims is like searching a needle in a haystack.

I am not a pro builder, but my guess is that the leviathan skeleton could probably be built with 75% less prims if megaprims could have been used. And probably with 90% less prims if sculpted megaprims would have been an option. This means the asset browser, the SL databases and the viewers of everybody coming close to that island would only need to store, transmit and render about 250-350 prims, instead of 2500.

To understand the (I assume deliberate) decision to not use megaprims, we need to take a step back. Megaprims were never regularly available in Second Life. Initially, the SL viewer limited the maximum size of a prim, and some clever person managed to circumvent this restriction and injected the first batch of megaprims which then got handed down from builder to builder. As a result, the check for the prim dimension was included in the server side, and megaprims could not be generated anymore. A while ago, a bug in the server code made the creation of megaprims possible again, and the second wave of prims became available. At the time of this writing, there are about 36,000 megaprims known and available in SL.

There is all kinds of rumours regarding megaprims. They allegedly cause lag. They allegedly steal sim resources. They allegedly influence the physics model badly. They allegedly are illegal and can get you banned using them. Indeed, the status of megaprims is a fuzzy one. Linden Lab never outright forbid their use. Neither did they take technical steps to restrict the usage. But also they never gave the "green light" for their usage. Megaprims are tolerated, but not loved. And because of this, Linden Lab will be careful not to set a precedent and use these prims in their own builds.

Hello clothes! I love you.I especially love wearing you when you look more comfortable and cozy than my normal RL clothes. That says something about the sad state of my closet right now, eh?

I went shopping this week and picked up the whimsical layered top from Tres Blah, one of my favorite shops since 2008. I was tempted to take this theme all the way into “cowgirl”, but instead I just kept grabbing awesome items and making them fit the mish-mash of “country comfy”. They don’t exactly match, but since I usually dress myself into the proverbial color corner (see my previous post for an example), this is a refreshing break.

My favorite sculpted jean skirt from UnTone Quilt goes with just about everything, so of course I couldn’t do without it. The Miel boots are somewhat goofy, but adorable and superbly textured. Oh, check out these tights! Holy sheeple, they’re affordable, cute, and I bought at least one of every awesome style over at Tee*fy. Go. Buy. Now.

Gee, Emerald Wynn. Thank you for linking to my Team Lizzie blog entry on your little rant. You bring forth all these accusations that Lizzie supposedly did, but you’ve posted no proof to back up your libelous statements.

It was a nice idea for a friend, there is no “other team”, let it go.

I’m just so sick of people writing about some big evil thing she supposedly did, and making digs at her on my plurk timeline. Yep Lizzie was my friend, but so are all of you. I’m not asking people to get along, but don’t ‘hate’ on someone just because ‘everybody else’ does. Look at your own interactions with them, and judge for yourself.

Lizzie was always nice to me, and when I needed help with iheartsl bloggers group she volunteered (and did a fantastic job). I don’t know all the “DETAILS” and I don’t care. If she has personally wronged you, then by all means jump on the hate bandwagon but if she hasn’t, why the fuck do you care? You know what I’m talking about. Let it go.

Good Lord, that pressure when you put a couple of days is a person doing normal things (going out, shopping, seeing things, working, living in reality and definitely not a blog with neurotic tendencies)! Well, first things first: since I'm here in regressive menhetn suffer severe and recurrent episodes, attending as follows: these dissociative episodes in which I return to a frequent state of my youth, in which the tendency to lose all kinds of objects was the norm. I managed to control this box for years (with minor bore) with checking rituals and a very well known, controlled and little changed. This environment does not exist now, so that the pathology has flare-ups. Finally, left with other partners to go to a party, which ultimately did not find, and ended up in a club called Q Park Avenue New York. The other night I went to the Greenie's dance and frolicked with a teal-green tentacle-monster. As we danced, I looked around the crowd and pondered how we all envisioned the concept "futuristic." Everyone looked sexy; that was my first thought. This is Second Life, however, and avatars have to TRY to not be. Sexy aside, I saw a lot of new ideas about shape and structure and fabric. In the future, fabric doesn't have to be cloth, and clothing doesn't have to cover the epidermis; sometimes it's embedded within, sometimes it takes the physical form and twists it entirely. I'd love to see a Galliano show in 3050 (if we cryogenically preserve him or something) -- would he make clothing out of dry ice and foam?

When it comes to Second Life, I think the SpaceNavigator is an essential camera and movement peripheral. I find myself unwilling to use SL unless it is plugged in and running. Heck... Even the robot finds it difficult to get away from. I used to give these away at random as gifts, but they've raised the price on them from $50 to $90. The price of stuff is not supposed to go up like that. Competition and innovation means the price of the same stuff is supposed to go down, not up. I guess I'll be giving away less of them as gifts.

After I saw it in her offices, Ms. Blackburn gifted this to me yesterday. If you knew the backstory, you'd realize that things have now come full circle. I couldn't stop laughing at the karmic balance. (And if you don't, well, some things that happen at SLCC are not for the squeamish or ticklish.)

Snapshots from Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe. The bagheaded bastard SecondLie bought a chair to support the show. Just one of the 5kL chairs, nothing fancy. Maybe I'll try to one-up him with a 10kL or a 20kL chair when I finally get this last card paid off. Tonight Live has done a lot to get the word and sound out about music on the grid, but in the end, with M's "killer ap" being more like "killer apathy" from the Labbies, nothing that anybody does will amount to much. Oh well. At least it's good for a tip, ja? And it lets others know: I give a shit.

Even without the usual iTunes gift certificate blowout, it was a brutal holiday season, and it didn't let up in January. But I think things are settling down, and I can keep climbing that hill until I reach zero again. For what? So it can all go to a RL house which will need furniture and cable and repairs and taxes and everything else? Rusikoff's "Life, Inc." is not telling me anything I didn't already know: the corporations and kings have set the board for the game, and the pieces we are forced to become just keep getting lured along. Am I one of those gamepieces? Or am I the robot... who is pretending to be a toy... or is that a toy pretending to be a robot? Or am I the walking satire of all the Labbie lies and mistakes and policy blunders, shaped like the pop-culture mystery phenomenon who was ultimately revealed... and faded away? Which am I? All of them? None of them? If I start again, will I just become myself again?

Since my earlier post there has been a slight change to my little competition to be held in association with the Artist’s Voice Originals Fair.

The Fair opens tomorrow, your TP point is here. Don’t go before the 8th Feb as you won’t be able to get in.

I’ve had to amend my competition a little bit, as one of the designers that i had included in the original photographs has since withdrawn from the Fair. Therefore to be fair, i have changed out those items, and those items only. Here are the new photos!

Embryo of Spring

I took a quick look over at Snapzilla and saw many snapshots comming from Embryo. I headed on over and started exploring. It's a very artistic simulator of strange and beautiful things.

In the center of the region, it appears there is a child/fetus that is sleeping until the spring. Upon arriving, I received some facelight attachments as well as a note card with a poem titled, Noctiluca. It was about how sad winter had become, that it was depressing him. Memories of what the bright future would bring him and another made him even sadder. The other was with someone else now, and so he sleeps, thinking of her.

The poem is better read than interpreted, and the visuals here are something to be experienced. It feels as if you are walking through a dream of someone elses memories.

Second Life official forums to be replaced Tuesday

Linden Lab is in the throes of closing the official Second Life forums and is creating alternative discussion spaces in its Clearspace blog/forum hybrid.

According to previous figures from Linden Lab staff, fewer than 700 of 18.1 million registered Second Life accounts ever participated in the official forums provided by the Lab. The partial closure of many of the most heavily trafficked areas of those forums when Lab announcements were migrated back out to the blog in 2006 did little to boost participation in the official forums.

The official vbulletin-based forums "did not scale" according to Linden Lab and were difficult to maintain, even for such modest usage levels as they experienced.

I've been trying to get a Macro to work that Torley Linden had recommended in the past. In it, Torley sets up a macro to copy the parcel name and description and paste it into an email snapshot. The code for the macro didn't work for me, and I finally found a way to fix the macro. The next question I have is if there is a way to open the "About Land" dialog with a key stroke.

So the truth is out there, Prok was right, Pixeleen is Mark McCahill of Gopher fame and hey I can now play the awestruck commoner who got to dance with a bit of a legend in geeksville.

The news, which was relayed by The Alphaville Herald and can be read here. Pixeleen's identity is also now part of internet folklore as it has been entered onto Mark McCahill's wikipedia page. This wasn't added by me I should add.

The story at The Herald is actually a very serious one and shouldn't be overshadowed by the revelation of who Pixeleen really is, there are important issues at stake but you can read about thay over at The Herald.
