America's Best Dance Crew Episode 506: The Lady Gaga Challenge

America's Best Dance Crew (Season 5) - MTV Shows

This week's challenge on America's Best Dance Crew was to assign each crew a Lady Gaga video and have them create a routine inspired by it. It was a smart move given how hot Lady Gaga is right now and how much dance plays a part in her videos and concerts. Here's my notes on the performances:

Static Noyze: As the "theatrical hip-hop" team, they had a leg up. So very impressive and stylish as expected. And nice seeing their team's drag queen "Baby Gaga" lead the routine with some nice vogueing moves.
Blueprint Cru: Great theatrics and costumes. Imaginative and edgy, really embodied the Gaga aesthetic. My favorite performance of the night.
Jungle Boogie: Very sexy and hard. Did the male dancers just shoot confetti out of tubes from between their legs? Yes, they did.
Heavy Impact: Athletic but kind of sloppy.
Hype 5-0: Also sloppy and pretty easy choreo. These Hawaiians need to go home.
Poreotix: I was kind of bored by this routine, as much as I like these guys.
Saltare: I'm so not into this crew, but they did a very entertaining and impressive routine this week. Two guys doing a double-tuck while jump-roping? Sick.

My favorites of the night: Blueprint Cru, Static Noyze and Saltare.

Neferia Abel’s SL world is full of beauty..it must be..how else can you explain a design like this?

Her Carmen white dress just left me in awe. Beautiful..beautiful work.

I love a tailored shirt..regardless if it’s SL or RL. I wear them for work quite often and this new shirt from Nef makes me wish I could have it in RL. Sigh..I so wish I could borrow her to come live with me and make me RL pretties.

Pathfinder Linden’s Lab Position Poofs

Pathfinder Linden announced today that his game god position has gone missing, leading the longtime Linden Lab staff member to consider other opportunities. The unfortunate news was made public in a post to the Second Life Educators mailing list, continuing a pattern staff turnover as game emperor M Linden’s cadre consolidates their positions of power in the wake of the departure of Second Life founders Philip and Cory Linden.

Pathfinder is apparently a victim of an internal game god reorganization – his announcement said in part, "Due to recent reorganizations at Linden Lab, my current position (Evangelist, Market Development) has ceased to exist. There are no alternative positions available to me, so as of March 12th I will be leaving the company".

As for the future, Pathfinder is keeping his options open saying "I am not sure what the future holds for me, but it will probably involve something at the intersection of online communities, virtual worlds and neuroscience. I will be remaining open to new opportunities."

Speculation about the Lab’s next move was the order of the day in-world, as members of the performing arts world were concerned at the loss of a patron. Other residents questioned the net present value of Torley Linden’s contributions to the Lab’s bottom line and asked if continuously parroting "friendly greetings" counts for more than Pathfinder’s contributions.

I recently heard about a growing and slightly disturbing trend on the SL fashion feeds. It seems everyone and their mother is using cocks and pussies in their blog post photos and store ads!

I am shocked! The poor animals have absolutely no say in this practice. Can you imagine hundreds of innocent cocks and pussies forced to be under hot lights for hours on end while someone takes photographs? Do they even get food and water? A place to rest?

Will cocks and pussies really sell your pixel clothing? No! They can’t even wear clothes, for Pete’s sake! We feel bad for the poor creatures. Is showing off your cock edgy?? Is showing a furry pussy artsy? No! It is just cruel.

At least in RL, representatives from the American Humane Society are on set to …Wait…what? Oh my god. But I thought… Really?

Playing viral games looking for… authenticity?

We had a great discussion at We Are the Network about viral business models and viral campaigns, discussing some of the texts Joel linked to on his blog joelfoner.com.

We discussed Facebook games such as Farmville and MafiaWars but also the Ozimal bunnies in Second Life. I wondered whether those very popular & viral games could “go to the other side” – imagine Farmville coming into Second Life and the Ozimals on Facebook (I know, many of you will cringe now) – but would it not be a way to get new people into Second Life? (just let me know)

During our discussion Melchizedek Blauvelt suggested me to watch this video, featuring Carnegie Mellon University Professor, Jesse Schell, who dives into a world of game development.

Schell explains how surprised he was about a number of developments in the games industry and tries to figure out what’s happening there. He points out some psychological tricks which help explain the success of certain games, but there is more.

There is a connection between the virtual/technological with the real, like in Webkinz (virtual and ‘real’ stuffed animals) and Mafia Wars (playing against your real friends). He situates this in a new Zeitgeist – people wanting some reality and authenticity in their lives, “escaping from a bubble of fake bullshit”. This may seem weird in a context of these games, but I let him explain his position all by himself:

Wow wow wow, check out this new Mirai Style hair. Usually this shop is a hit or miss for me. Some of the styles are adorable and some styles are off – like it doesn’t fit right, the prims are a mess, etc. HOWEVER, today I got lucky. This new Kumy style is ADORABLE, and curly, and BIG. I purchased one in Blonde and one in Dark Brown. The head band is scripted to change 12 different colors.

My guess is that you’ll see this hairstyle everywhere, for the next couple of days. It’s hot!

SL 2.0: Carnage and Cathedrals

There’s a very disruptive change coming from the Real World and it’s going to hit Second Life later this year.

That’s my conclusion after thinking about the implications of the new SL Viewer 2.0 beta that’s been making its way into computers around the SL world for the past couple of weeks. Pieces of the master-plan jigsaw puzzle are coming together and The Lab’s strategy is now becoming much clearer. Let me explain.

Viewer 2.0 is part of a larger strategy for vastly expanding the scope of Second Life. We’ve heard their execs fancifully describe a future where they might have a million simultaneous residents, an unimaginably large number compared to today’s mere 80,000. As unbelievable as that number is, I think they’re not kidding.

To achieve this, they must have: even more compelling content to attract and retain more residents; the ability to hold more simultaneous residents per region; many more new residents; and a great first-hour experience to keep them once they arrive. Viewer 2.0 addresses several of these points, but not all of them.

While much has been written about the features of the new viewer for good or evil, there are two things that stand out above all the rest in my mind. First: Shared Media and Second: Mesh import. Yes, Mesh import has not yet been released, but The Lab has indicated they’ll be releasing it “later this year”. It’s my belief that these two features will change the landscape so utterly there will be a New Virtual Order.

Shared Media, if you haven’t heard, is the ability to bring web content directly into the Grid. At first glance this might appear to mean you can view your spreadsheet or powerpoint presentation in world. Perhaps you’ll watch a YouTube video. Yeah, that’s likely quite useful for some, but many residents question what value it could possibly do for them. Who needs spreadsheets, anyway?

My belief is that viewing plain old web pages, videos and documents are not the best use of this feature. Instead we’ll see a complete revolution in the control systems for in-world items. Gone will be those bush-league blue dialog boxes that make operating many virtual items terribly frustrating: makers must fit their system into only twelve identically ugly buttons, and this makes almost every complex item confusing to use.

Instead we will soon see the development of very professional control systems that are as beautiful and functional as you’d see on contemporary web pages - because they WILL BE web pages! And you can do this all from within LSL scripts. It's not about viewing YouTube on a prim - it's about using the maker’s easy-to-use web-like controls on a prim.

We’ll also see a flood of data entering and leaving the Grid via these new web interfaces, providing unimaginable capabilities. One simple very example: an in-world game with a terrific interface that you can also play outside the grid via the website - using the exact same interface! The applications that could be made are almost limitless. Let’s face it, the previous development environment was extremely primitive and it severely limited what creators could build. Many doors open with Shared Media, and The Lab is no doubt hoping for significant innovation.

Mesh Import is the ability to load existing 3D designs from the outside into the Grid, without having to tediously build things in-world with the rudimentary 3D tools provided. New QUALITY Shoe Store Sim-I-Lar

As some of you know, I really enjoy discovering small, new shops that offer quality items. I came across one a few weeks ago, but have been so busy working on a wedding (which I will share with you later) that I haven't been able to take time to share "Sim-I-Lar" with you.

I had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Larisa Tylman and Simone Bonham, and learning a bit about what makes them tick and to also compliment them on their work.

Simone and Larisa have been working on the idea of boots for about 8 months. They wanted to create something different and affordable, as they both love boots, they were astounded by the prices of some of the better quality ones. They didnt want to be known as just another make of boots, they wanted to be known for quality and totally unique designs.

Simone is the designer she came up with the idea for Aspide, being an Italian, she has a thing about shoes and boots. She is a graphic artist and a genius with numerous graphic softwares. Simone has been using photoshop for at least 15 years.

A friend of mine asked me why so many avatars on the feed put things in their mouth — like ridiculous things, that have no business being there. When the trend first started, it was limited to things like lollipops, ice cream, cigarettes, duct tape, etc. Then people started attaching cassette tapes, buttons, household objects, and little animals.

I think putting objects in your mouth is OK — I don’t mind it in the right situations! But I’ve seen people blog a formal gown, while omnomnomnoming* on a little mouse.

Here’s a list of reasons why *I* think so many people are putting things in their mouth:

They’re hungry! Omnomonomnomnommmmm!
They’re accessorizing!
They want to draw attention away from their non-matching prim feet.
They’re trying to save prims (by wearing it instead of rezzing it).

That’s all I can think of for now.

*Omnomnom = eating sounds! My plurk pals recently enlightened me that this is cute and not retarded, so I stand corrected. OM NOM NOM NOM LOL!

Feeling awful this morning. Went to bed a bit after 10, woke up at 4 and never got back to sleep. I'm pretty sure I had a bad reaction to some garlic and onions I chopped up for pasta last night. Lots of gurgling, but very little in the way of forward progress. I needed a day off, anyway. This weekend wasn't any rest at all, and I think I'll just curl up in a ball and moan in the corner. Of course, when I called in sick, the overnight jackass didn't bother telling the morning crew. Got a text message asking if I was coming in. Wonderful. (Fucker.)

While waiting to bomb the porcelain harbor with what will amount to a crime against plumbing fixtures, figured I'd get the rope barrier that Tobias Novi is selling. Copy/Mod and 395 for 1 prim? Yeah, I'll take two. I arranged it along the road over the fishing dock. Looks good, I think.

MH Creations Dolly Set

Everyone has them and I wanted to make them too. I’m a follower like that. Nah…I just wanted to see if I could. In the Animation barn at MH Creations, you’ll find both the Stand and Sit of the Dolly Static Animation Pose Set. You can purchase them either as singles or the set.

The skin has a bit of a story to it….a good one though! I rented a shop from RosieB over at the Shopatorium and was recently going through some of my inventory finally filing things when I saw a folder that said “Welcome Pack from d/g.” I had no clue what it was or when I received it, so opened it up and saw skins from Desolution/Grace and promptly tried some on then fired off a thank you IM and an apology for not noticing and responding sooner (why can’t thank you cards in RL be this easy?). I originally had planned on wearing a different outfit from thedollhouse for the dolly poster and one of the skins went perfect with it. After I changed outfits, I realized the make up didn’t work well and hopped on over to Desolution/Grace to see what else was to be had. Trying out a few demo’s, I settled on the MockSkin Renewal: Svetlana Golden Cressida: Pale edition and snatched it up for 500L!

(love the skin and the choker which I picked up from *Dreams*, my two new favorite items right now!)

Based on the region of Shekhawati (the Garden of Shekha) in Rajasthan in India, the designer – Veekay Navarathna – has created a truly original area, and a fascinating glimpse into an aspect of Indian culture.

Shekhawati: The Art Gallery

Shekhawati is sometimes known as “the open art gallery of Rajasthan” as it has the largest concentration of frescos in the world. That is because the buildings of Shekhawati are decoreated with rich, beautful and complex frescos painted on their outer – as well as inner – walls. This alone would make Shekhawati a stunning place to visit – but in addition, Veekay has brought together a collection of traditional and modern Indian art unparalleled in Second Life.

Corsi Mousehold: JLU Are Power Hungry Crazed Nutjobs

[Corsi Mousehold has been awarded the “commie” or comment-of-the-week award for her explanation of why the Justice League Unlimited superheros are not welcome in Furnation. The award winning comment is reproduced below. ]

Here’s a bit of a story. IN years past the JLU were a welcomed member of the FurNation community. They didn’t bother anyone and no one really bothered them. That was until we were under a griefer attack and the JLU came over to ‘assist’ and the first thing they did was report ME to the lab for griefing. They approached me and yelled at me for causing the issue. I asked them why they reported me of all people. By this time I had already deleted all the offensive material. They told me that I was the one putting it all out and they had seen me doing it. Basically they had watched me selecting objects to return them. They were extremely rude to me at the time and informed me that they would have reports go up on me. I contacted Kalel and he too said I was being reported and then for harassment as well. I was not rude to these people at all. It was several days later that I was contacted by Kalel informing me that the ‘charges’ had been dropped because they did not realize I was the sim owner. My response of course was to point to the info hub I had in the center of the sandbox that had my name clearly displayed as the sim owner and if his comrades had taken a moment to look they would have seen I was in the admin team.

He called me ungrateful and abuse reported me again. I was informed of this by him as well as he had several of his friends make the same report. All reports were dismissed by the GOV team as illegitimate. Soon I had JLU members ‘patrolling’ the sandboxes and abuse reporting anyone that they felt was disobeying my rules. They started to get several members of my community banned. I was forced to add a new sim rule that the JLU were not allowed in the sim for any reason. When they had seen this, I was reported again for griefing. Again the report was dismissed.

In the end I was approached months later by Green Lantern Corps asking if it was okay for them to be there. They apologized for the treatment the JLU had given me and asked if they would be allowed to just come and build.

Green Lantern Corps are allowed to visit and act if they wish. But they are not allowed to be in tag or act as a part of the Corps while visiting. If they are the subject of a griefing they are to come to me and I would take care of it. They can then file all the reports they like.

In the end the JLU are a bunch of power hungry crazed nutjobs that think being an SL Police force gives them the right to get away with whatever they want. The GLC on the other hand have always been very respectful to me and my residents.

[With Post 6 as popular as it is, it is rare that I have to go searching for models these days. I certainly do that, but most of the models you see here from week to week have approached me and patiently waited until I had a chance to meet with them. This week’s model, Terra Price, is an exception. I spotted her one day and immediately begged her to pose for us. That was months ago, and my persistence has finally paid off. To make life even better for me, it turns out that in real life she is talented in the digital graphic arts and wanted to do her own pictures. I guess i should say hi to everyone even though I never knew, well not until now, about this blog and its people reading it, so hello! Don’t know where or with what to start but I guess I should probably tell something little about myself. I’m 28 and honestly I still don’t know much about myself, which is why SL is a good get away place for me to explore my mind in ways I can’t in the evil world of RL.

I don’t really do much in SL compared to some really interesting people I’ve met like fashion designers, builders, scripters or business people, some of them are really amazing individuals and I just admire people that create with passion. But I do really like to play with my avi and its looks, and I love to keep adding things, and then tweaking and changing them to make it look pleasant. That requires a lot of shopping which I also love to do, even though it’s really damn addictive, time consuming and it costs! I tried to build but didn’t stick with it for too long, I’m just probably lacking patience for such things but don’t let that make you think I have a short temper, I’m really friendly to people. Over all I just like to hang out with friends and meet new people, I’m pretty easy going.

And I also like to dance, and yes, I’m a TG and love it with no shame, I’m an exotic dancer in one of the best clubs which is also female/male friendly, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to advertise it here but if you take another good look at the pictures, you might find out, or you can feel free to IM me in-world if you wish to know about it or about me. I’m probably just writing a lot of uninteresting stuff but thanks to Timothy and a lot of his patience with me- I finally managed to write this little article and provide three pics of my avatar which I hope you’ll all like.

So, your team has worked hard on designing a high-performance software system. One of the key components is a thread or service designed to buffer and protect the application from slow operations by caching the response of lookups from slower or more distant systems (like frequently used credential data or permissions, for example that might be coming from database servers). On the test-bench, everything looks good and then the code goes into production. Everything scales nicely up to peak loads, and then the whole system begins to stall and stutter. Performance ratchets in a staccato sinusoid, working just fine here, and coming to an almost complete halt there. After a while, as overall load falls and end-users become frustrated, it all sorts itself out and runs smoothly, until just after the next peak load. You direct the team to investigate, to profile code, to monitor logs and performance. Nobody can find a link. Your engineers come up with plans to optimize the cache service and eke every microsecond of performance out of it. Mysteriously, the problem just gets worse, not better despite thousands of hours and weeks or months of investigation, and tuning. Someone discovers that disabling hyperthreading on the server mitigates the problem significantly, but nobody’s closer to a solution. Congratulations, you’ve hit a common, but very rarely understood problem in high-performance systems design. It’s bitten almost every high-performance systems shop, yet almost nobody has truly solved the problem, because hardly anyone has understood the true cause at the time. Most engineers end up working around it, because they never quite know where to look. Let’s save the day and tell your team where to look. It might not be the source of your particular problem, but ruling it out early can save you tens of thousands of dollars in development, and far more than that in frustrated customers. [...]

Announcing: The Metaverse Reader

I’m really pleased to be able to announce the availability of The Metaverse Reader, an iPhone application for virtual worlds residents / follower / interested parties.

You can download it here for free.

What is it?

It’s essentially an RSS reader with two sections. The first is our own RSS feed . The Second is a ‘Wider Metaverse’ section, which features a range of virtual worlds related feeds from around the world.

There’s only a handful at this stage but we’ll certainly be adding more – there’s been some issues with non RSS 2.0 feeds on some sites, which we’re working with the owners to rectify.

The ‘Submit a Story’ section is purely a contact form if you want to make contact.

Why wouldn’t I just use my RSS Reader?

For some, a broader RSS reader may indeed be preferable. However, we’ve had a lot of feedback that people like a quicker option of a handful of feeds easily accessed. The Metaverse Reader is exactly that. And at under 200KB in size, it’s also doesn’t take up much room.

Can I suggest a feed to add?

Absolutely – just contact us with the details.

Where do I get support for this app?

Right here.

Are there plans to expand the app?

Version 2 is already underway – if you have suggestions for improvement, we’d love to hear from you.

I do need to give a huge plug to the developer who created the application from the specification provided. Phillip Street is an Australian iPhone developer and contributing writer who happens to live pretty close to me. I couldn’t be happier with his responsiveness and price competitiveness and I’ve already contracted him to work on the next version.

So if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or have managed to be one of the world’s first iPad users, give the Metaverse Reader a whirl and critique away!

Field Museum of Chicago is Hiring a Digital Learning Specialist

I got word from my friends at the fantastic Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago that they are looking for a "Digital Learning Specialist" to work in the education department.

According to the job description, the Digital Media Learning Specialist will "develop digital learning projects and help manage the infusion of digital media into existing education programs." The digital media used ranges from social networking sites, to customized games, to online learning communities using template platforms, as well as partnering with industry virtual world leaders to build customized Field Museum experiences. Sounds like a really cool job at a great cultural and scientific institution.

At the SLoscars last night, Avatar cleaned up. Well, not that Avatar. This one. Me!

I won for best supported slider breasts or something. I forget. I was drunk on prim champagne. I am sure I remember thanking the man upstairs (the guy I found squatting in a skybox above our house). I wouldn’t forget — I am sweet and down to Earth like that.

My friend, Gwendolyn Bieler (Gwendolyn Bieler Interior Designs) hosted an Oscar party last night at the Hallelujah Azul shopping sim and did a fabulous job with the red carpet interviews, too. When she asked what I was wearing, I went on about how my stylist/typist had found a lovely vintage Apple May gown for me. Vintage. That’s Hollywood code for, “No one can get it any more. All mine! HAHAHAHA!!”

But you might still be able to get mine. I don’t know. I bought it a long time ago.

There are two amazing events in the SL fashion world during the month of March that are totally worth your lindens: The GIA Accessory Fair and Melt: An Installation on Thin Ice.

If you want to grab a belt for every outfit, a necklace for each occasion, and random stuff to stick in your hair, you should taxi yourself right over to the Accessory Fair right now. There are dozens of new releases, fair-exclusive items, and heaps of goodies to discover! Don’t settle for the two or three stores you already frequent; there are so many more creators to appreciate and encourage.

You don’t have to be diva to accessorize your look. To illustrate, I chose a more unisex/androgynous outfit for some of the more casual pieces of “flair” you can grab at the Fair. I started with this smashing skin by Juliette Westerburg of Tres Blah. A half dozen ice-inspired makeups are exclusive to the Melt installation. Every single one of them are charming, and I had to grab the whole pack. I’m a sucker for the sweetness!

It’s so hard to find good hat hair in SL. This adorable pixie cut from Cri-Cri comes with a color-change hat in two styles, all menu-controlled on click. I’m thrilled that the hat isn’t too big; so many make my head look swollen in the back.

The Mermaid necklace from Bliensen + MaiTai and the adorably quirky owl from Skream both use my favorite shade of turquoise that’s become so popular this season. I’m hoping to expand my jewelry color palette during the Accessory Fair. In anticipation for spring, I want more vibrant hues to accompany my often neutral-heavy looks.

And with visions of sugar plums or some other oh-right-this-isn’t-Christmas objects dancing in my head, I settle down for a (hopefully short) winter’s nap. You may need one too, after all the lag!

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be showcasing more of the delicious Accessory Fair releases by some of our favorite designers plus a few you may discover for the first time.

- Tomorrow Tuesday March 9 at Noon SLT/PDT We Are the Network will discuss “viral success factors for viral business.” What makes one YouTube video go insanely viral while another one fails miserably? How to go viral on Facebook and Twitter? In fact, we don’t really know I guess. If we could really make it happen with a high degree of certainty, I guess we would drown in viral YouTube stuff coming from all the major brands, and I don’t see that happen. But then again, maybe there are some key elements which at least makes us understand the phenomenon of “going viral”. In the meantime we can only be fascinated watching videos such as Hamster Killerblick

but also Susan Boyle of course.

- On Wednesday March 10 Metanomics will explore the 2010 Virtual Symposium – Education for Everyone: Expanding Access Through Technology on March 10, with two key members of the symposium on the show.

Metanomics host Robert Bloomfield will interview Dr. Rebecca Clothey and Dr. Kristen Betts on Wednesday, March 10 at 12pm PST and will discuss the virtual symposium, it’s creation and goals. They will also attempt to address the same questions the symposium will ask, such as how has technology increased or decreased equality in education in your community? What initiatives and technologies have been used successfully to enable access to previously underserved students? What role can government policies and public/private partnerships play in creating a success?

So last night, Seedy, Kat, Alivia, and I decided to have an “I’m on SL and the Oscar’s don’t matter” Party. Seedy took us whoring in our sexy best, and this is what I put together for the shindig.

Subtitle or Voice Over?

One thing that I absolutely despise is voice overs, or otherwise known as dubs. It’s not so bad in video games these days, but they used to be the worst in many anime and import games. In fact even in the latest hit, Heavy Rain, I have to admit that some of the voice acting just bugged me every time I heard it (listen for the word “Origami” said as “ori-gam-ee” instead of “ori-gom-ee”).

However, the voice actors in recent years have improved a lot in English games and it’s been better and better. I personally still prefer original sound tracks with subtitles for movies and video games, but these days with many of the best voice acting talents based in Canada, it’s not so bad anymore. I wonder if that’s why they can’t say “Origami.” But I digress.

I believe that in the US, most gamers would still prefer dubs over subtitles although those that are fans of RPGs tend to also be die-hard anime fans. Die-hard otakus are very much into the entire subtitle culture which is where fansubs were first scene. If you figure that the majority of your gamers in the United States tend to play FPS and sports games though, then it makes sense why a percentage would be higher for dubs in the United States compared to the recent study in Japan that placed the preference in subtitles at 49%.

Regardless of which you prefer, I think the ultimate goal is to have the choice of it on each game. After all, you are putting down sixty hard earned greenbacks for those games. To include the original soundtrack isn’t too difficult, and subtitling really just requires gathering up some fans to translate anyways. Then everyone would have the choice of which selection and it would be the best of both worlds.

Hundreds of nomadic Fulani herdsmen launched coordinated attacks on three Christian villages -- Dogo Nahawa, Ratsat and Zot, just south of Jos -- about 3 a.m. Sunday.

The killers planted nets and animal traps outside the huts of the villagers, mainly peasant farmers, fired weapons in the air, then attacked with machetes, according to human rights lawyer Shehu Sani of the nongovernment Civil Rights Congress, who visited the villages and interviewed dozens of survivors.

I along with my colleague Amira will be facilitating a professional development training on "Transforming Youth From Social Media Consumers to Creators" on Wednesday, March 17. Here's the full description:

Global Kids has been a leader integrating social media tools within educational programs to develop 21st Century skills since 2000. With the emergence of online media from Youtube to Wikipedia, the new digital generation is presented with opportunities to broadcast their voice in unprecedented ways. In this training, educators will be engaged in hands on activities using social media tools that have educational applications, such as blogs, digital comics, maps and more, and hear about successful case studies from a variety of educational settings.

The workshop is open to anyone who is interested, although obviously most useful for those who work with young people in the teen/ tween age ranges.

All Global Kids trainings are offered at $75 per person with a discounted rate of $50 each for two sessions or more. Trainings take place from 9:00 am to 3.00 pm on the day indicated, at Global Kids' Center for Global Leadership, located at 137 East 25th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10010.

The play/pause button is reversed (hit play to pause, pause to play)

The UI doesn't suppress (the top bar is visible).

Inventory Search fills both All and Recent fields (counterproductive for my way of using Search).

I can't create a prim except on the ground.

I can't easily deselect things.

~~If I Search in Inventory then try to scroll down and select something it zips itself back up to the top before I can get what I want.~~-- I couldn't repro that just now so maybe it's fixed or was just limited in time/place.

It’s the Academy Awards at Hallelujah Azul

It was Academy Awards night at Hallelujah, and the community and its guests celebrated in a grand style. ’Twas a black tie affair that was an evening of fashion, personality, and dancing. Everyone was absolutely dazzling, and, last night, Hallelujah’s Town Square was the place to be and be seen. Indeed, there were a number of stars in attendence. It’s these wonderful events that have made Hallelujah a very special community.

Louis and Isabele got SL-hitched last night. They needed a photographer, but I wasn't really able to commit to doing it officially and such, since I've been having all kinds of issues sicne 1.36.2 server and Viewer 2.0 beta came out. (I've been using LL's 1.23 when I can.) The snapshots I got before crashing out are here. I got back in just in time for those final vow things. Then, as people lagged over to the party area like so much avatamolasses, the Oscars needed some serious riffing on... as if nobody else was doing it over Twitter, right? Where the Hell did this weekend go? I'm exhausted. Beyond exhausted. And yet, aside from getting back from Kevin Smith's thing after midnight on Friday night, did I do anything? Something's messed up in my internal clocks. I think I'll see Alice tonight. The theater is on the way home from work. Didn't bring a packet of cheese with me... I don't plan on having popcorn there because popcorn is seriously messing me up. Changes. Suck.

Thought I would go a different direction this week, casual with a punch. For Viv I decided to create all the options from the waist down this time. Sculpted mini skirt and shorts alone or mini and shorts with 3/4 socks. The 3/4 socks are ankle length but I have included a layer to make them full if you wish. Thigh highs are also included which can be worn with either mini or shorts. Cropped jacket with collar and cuffs completes the design.

MaxCase's Sim Neighbours was a very enlightening database, and when it went belly-up it was missed. There's a new database, though, which is interesting to query as the Lindens now put eight sims to a server, supposedly.

Find That Laggy Second Life Neighbor!

Argent Stonecutter explains it clearly: "Most sims don't actually need 800MB working set. On average a sim will be N megabytes below 800MB working set. If you have 4 sims, on the average someone would have to be 3N megabytes over the limit before you start paging. If you have 8 sims, they'll have to be 7N megabytes over the limit before you start paging.

Another way to look at it, with 7 sims on the server, the odds that you'll have an unusually "fat" sim go up, but the odds that you'll have one or more unusually "thin" sims go up as well.

Another way to look at it, if somehow they were putting ALL the sims on one server with I don't know how many terabytes of RAM, the impact of the "fat" sims would be so diluted you'd never notice.

This is basic queueing theory. It's why timesharing services and any other service that has large scale sharing of resources allow overcommitment. It's why sharing a motorcycle with a fat guy is so much worse than sharing a 747 with 30 fat guys. The more resources are shared, the less impact any given freeloader has."

It’s been a couple of weeks since Second Life’s Viewer 2.0 launched, and as always there’s been no shortage of comment. Gauging the balance is always a challenge, but I think it’s fair to say that overall the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The fly in the ointment has been the new search functionality, particularly its impact on live music events, with some musicians very frustrated at the setback although there doesn’t seem to be widespread concern.

For what it’s worth, I’ve found Viewer 2.0 has been a huge step forward, making me happier to log in each time. I’m not 100% sold on the new camera controls but that’s more an adjustment issue. Ron Blechner has a great summary of perceived improvements with his post 21 Reasons the New Second Life Viewer 2.0 is a Huge Improvement. Veteran SL resident Gwyneth Llewelyn has a brilliant tutorial for Mac users on optimising their Viewer 2.0 experience.

I’ve certainly been critical of Linden Lab over the years over updates that haven’t delivered or decisions that appeared short-sighted. With Viewer 2.0, it appears a more methodical approach to software development has paid off. It’s far from certain, and I’d suggest unlikely that Viewer 2.0 will drive more widespread adoption, but whether it does or not, it certainly appears to have made the majority of current users happier.

Over to you: do I have the rose-coloured glasses on or would you agree things have improved? I’d also love to hear from SL musicians who believe the search functionality has impeded their performance work.

Hot like a Polar Bear

I went to the MELT event @ the Mirror sim. The installation is pretty cool, except getting to the event was rather difficult because 1. It’s on a homestead sim, and 2. I was trapped under ice when I tp’d, I kept trying to go “UP” when someone told me that I actually need to stay below the ice to shop.

Once I found the shop though, I couldn’t get inside so I had to sit on one of Miabella Foxley’s beds to get “IN”. Once I was in, I bought the bed! Yay new bed…. I hope I’ll remember to use this somewhere.

Anyways, there are lots of cute stuff to purchase but I fell in love with Magic Nook’s cute accessories. Ayumi Cassini’s stuff was super affordable and they come in PINK!

Since I’m trying to keep my skin addiction under control, I only bought “accessories” and passed up on the skins (for now).

I also bought the Surf Couture ‘Hundred Million Dollar Blindfold because I really like the message behind it. Every time you buy something you don’t need in SL, a polar bear is decapitated. JUST KIDDING! That’s not the message. But it would make a fantastic accessory for any fabulous SL stripper.

About these 8 Tracks

Slow-Motion Sensuality – This started out as a riff on Enigma's "Callas Went Away", one of Cretu's lesser-known-yet-most-enchanting tracks. Aside from Fifth Element and crossovers like Emma Shapplin, there haven't been that many compelling musics combining opera and techno. As often is the case, I wasn't going for reality, but surreality, and I'm really pleased with how the piano melody and creepy children laughing turned out. And oh, the water. To this day I love wet samples!
Seafoam Spacewalk – If anyone gets the reference in this without me telling, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU. I tend to be several steps removed that way, and I had then watched Scary Movie with my brother. You know where that part where Anna Faris says how much she wants to walk on the moon? That's where the idea came from. There's a wormy lead that was transmogrified from 90s gangsta hip-hop. As I continue to say, inspiration can come from anywhere.
In the Garden of Hopes+Dreams – I once wondered why it took certain music trends so long to cross over from Europe and Asia to America. This was borne from an era of post-Aqua, neo-DDR enthusiasm. I definitely went overboard on the "DANCING THROUGH FLOWERS!" factor. This is probably one of the happiest things I ever made, both in name and substance. The snapshot sound at the end would foreshadow my SL addiction two-odd years later.
What Is Future Jazz? – I don't smoke, but I've always wanted to know what it's like. Not enough to try it, though. I had a visual of all these well-suited ladies and gentlemen in some secret jazz club, bigtime smokers whose utility would come through providing stage ambience. After all, smoke hides, it obscures, and if Lost is to be bereaved, it kills and transforms into people you know. I guess you could consider this drum 'n' bass? The Mellotron (which I dubbed the Smellotron due to the smoke) also shines. Or smells.
Constant State of Revolution – Some of my music is inspired by communism and rampant totalitarian regimes. (Like "The Long March".) Maybe in an alternate reality I'm a musical minister of propaganda? I'm the kind of person that grew up learning about Che Guevara from a NES game, so it was only unnatural that I would put these stompin' drums and "VIVA LA REVOLUCION!" crowd chants together. Dutchies Linden Home

I love a challenge. And furnishing a Linden Home with only 117 prims to work with is certainly that, especially when you want it to be warm, classy, with as much features a rl house would have and as realistic as possible with everything shaded. But here it is, Dutchies Linden Home, 115 prims fully furnished so you can still whip out the poseballs in the couch and the bed, with a kitchen, livingroom, bedroom and even a bathroom section. It looks great!

Ik ben gek op uitdagingen. En een Linden Home meubileren met maar 117 prims om mee te werken is dat zeker, helemaal als je wilt dat het gezellig is, stijlvol, met alles wat een rl huis zou hebben en zo realistisch mogelijk met overal een schaduw onder. The Washington Post runs this story in which ten players in the tech scene look back, a decade later, at the Internet boom and bust.

I don’t think we’ll have a specific tech bust of this magnitude again (we just had another bust, related to the financial sector, not the tech sector).

The cost of failure is much lower these days, and the big movers such as Facebook and Twitter are as yet not public companies.

All this does not mean that we cannot have hypes anymore – only those hypes won’t have that dramatic impact the Internet bust had ten years ago.

Second Life had its hype moment. Reading all the stuff about augmented reality, that could very well turn out to be another hype moment. But wait, what exactly is a hype? It involves people losing their money, but not necessarily the end of technological evolution – the internet had no problem surviving both the bust a decade ago and the recent financial bust.

In Eve Online, there's a never ending demand for stuff. Pilots need space ships, modules to fit them with, and ammunition - all the time, because ships get destroyed and ammo gets spent in an endless grind that only stops during downtime. Industrialists make a nice living based on this continuous demand, but they are not the only ones. There's also quite a bit of interregional trade going on, and for the past few weeks I have become involved in this part of Eve Online as well.

A while ago I needed a couple of 250mm Compressed Coil Guns: a type of medium sized rail guns which I often use on my mission running ships. On my way to a corp event a dozen jumps out of my home system, I crossed a region boundary, and while checking the local market prices I noticed these railguns were a lot cheaper here than in my home region. Immediately I saw an opportunity for making a profit, and so, on a whim, I became an arms dealer! In this neighbouring region, I bought almost all of these guns I could find for a very decent price, and started to sell them in my home region at a nice profit. After a while I ran out of cheap guns with prices in the neighbouring region rising as well, so I have had to travel further and further to get the guns at a worthwhile price.

Yesterday I found myself scouring through obscure systems, buying a few guns here and some there, creating a small stock to trade with, and that's when I realised this wasn't the way to go, I was wasting my time on petty trade! If I want to be a trader, even if it's a side job, I need to have ample supplies of the item I'm trying to profit off. I need more guns to sell! Yesterday evening, I decided to take my trusted Iteron transport vessel "Daf 95" to Jita and do some serious shopping there. Prices, while not as low as the initial stock I acquired in the neighbour system, are still favourable, so I stockpiled almost a thousand guns. I have since planted them here and there in regional trade hubs, spread over several regions. My prices are reasonable, but my profits still range from 50%-100% per gun if I succeed in selling them at these prices. The top left picture here shows, that this is definitely not a given.

Traveling to Jita, by the way, proved dangerous: on two occasions I was targeted by gate campers, in high sec no less. In both cases I was quick enough to get away before any of them could lock on to me. Afk travel to Jita is definitely not the way to go, that's for sure.. Jump through a gate, align to next gate, and warp away as fast as you can.

In the coming weeks it will become clear if I stand to profit from my first concerted effort at trade. It's a whole new game with new rules!

West of Ireland: 2010 Festival of St Patrick Poster

The West of Ireland region is, as some of you already know, our region of the month in the March issue of Prim Perfect. And the celebrations there for St Patrick’s Day are already in full swing!

The Festival Charity Auction began at noon on Friday, March 5 in the Celtic Crossing Shopping area. The Auction is showcasing everything from one-of-a-kind designer gowns, to signature jewelry by Second Life creators such as Nonna Hedges, Kunglers Design, Nicky Ree, and Eolande’s Jeweled Details. Also available for auction will be signed hardbound copies of novels by authors Arlene Radasky (The Fox) and Rhonda Carpenter (The Mark of the Druid) which will be shipped directly to the winning bidder. Bidding will close Monday evening, March 8 at 7pm, and is open to anyone. All auction proceeds will benefit Project Children.

The fully furnished Kismet Ashthorne Manor is on display on Bundoran just north of Nancy Blake’s Pub in the WOI Estate. The model is based on the 14th century manor houses in the Cotswolds region of England. It is in the same Cotswolds theme as the very popular Charingworth Manor, but is sized to fit on a 4096 sqm parcel. The soft, buttery yellow and warm grey colors of this theme are seen in the stonework textures and throughout the interior. The Ashthorne features an impressive entry hall with a split staircase, a roomy living room with fireplace and window seat, large kitchen and formal dining area, and two bedrooms upstairs on either side of the open entry hall. The dining area features an alcove with built-in sideboard. Additional doors in the bedrooms, living room and kitchen provide passage to the other wing via a back porch and balcony. The home will come fully furnished, and retails in world for approximately $L13,000.

Augmented reality as a future horizon for news media

Yesterday I talked about chat as a way to facilitate community interaction for news media. The chat tool we discussed, CoverItLive, is rather sophisticated, but in the end it is just 2D chat, with the possibility to add other media such as video, rss-feeds, pictures, links etc. Today I’d like to explore some more futuristic possibilities for news media but also for all those wanting to change things in society.

I also invite you for “Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe” a TV Talk show filmed in Second Life, today Sunday March 7th at 6 pm SLT (3 am Monday, March 8th, CET). I’m one of the guests and will talk about augmented reality (more about today’s show here).

What do we mean by “augmented reality”? Wikipedia says:

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery.

Let’s just say that augmented reality “augments” our physical surroundings by putting layers of digital data on top of that reality, enabling us to store, to perceive and to search those data.

The term itself was coined in 1990 by Tom Caudell, a researcher at aircraft manufacturer Boeing, so Wired says:

He applied the term to a head-mounted digital display that guided workers through assembling electrical wires in aircrafts. The early definition of augmented reality, then, was an intersection between virtual and physical reality, where digital visuals are blended in to the real world to enhance our perceptions.

The term however does not mean the same thing for everybody. Wikipedia explains that according to one definition (Ronald Azuma) it combines real and virtual, is interactive in real time and is registered in 3D. Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino defined Milgram’s Reality-Virtuality Continuum in 1994. They describe a continuum that spans from the real environment to a pure virtual environment. In between there are Augmented Reality (closer to the real environment) and Augmented Virtuality (is closer to the virtual environment).

Some AR applications

In fact we’re already rather used to AR in the media, more specifically in sports coverage. Just look at the virtual lines indicating the position of the puck in ice hockey or superimposing data about a record holder on actual images of a swimming event.

Another application is in advertisement where one can hold some code in front of a webcam and subsequently see images in 3D and eventually interact with these images.

In first-person shooters we’re used in getting instructions and information pretty much as in military AR applications. We don’t see the enemy nor those providing the information, but right there, somewhere on our screen, the information appears.

The military are using AR for a long time now, one could trace the early phases of this in the Airforce during the Second World War projecting information on the windshield, going straight to current times (pilots being able to look around as if their own plane was not there hence not blocking their sight).

An important aspect is how we see the AR data: using a display on a laptop or a smartphone, a Head-up display (HUD) or a Helmet mounted display (HMD) or spatial displays which don’t have to be carried by any particular person.

"Hindsquare": The ethics of checking in on FourSquare when you aren't actually there

I've been playing FourSquare, the passively multiplayer online game for a few months now, and find it diverting and sometimes useful.

For those that don't play, basically it's an online service that gives you points and virtual rewards for "checking in" at various places in your city. FourSquare has a web version, but it's most easily played using one of their many cell phone apps.

Points are awarded using some combination of whether it's a new place you've never been before, someplace off the beaten track, or someplace that no one has submitted to FourSquare yet. You seem to get more points for bars, clubs and restaurants than the drug store or the grocery, but I'm not sure. Beyond points, FourSquare awards "badges" for dubious distinctions like being "crunked" when you've been to more than one bar in one night.

And there's a social aspect as well. You can friend other players on FourSquare and see where they are going during their day. And as you get points and badges, you can compete with your friends to see who has achieved the most and get tips on where to go and what to do where you are at. It's all kind of useless and fun.

Last night while out with my friend Funksoup, we talked about the phenomenon of "Hindsquare". I.e. when you realize that were just at a place that you should have checked into FourSquare for the points, but didn't because you didn't have cell signal, forgot, was too drunk, or whatever. The worst form of hindsquare is when you get home after a long night and just check-in all the places you've been during the day at once.

So the question is: Is it cheating to check-in at a place when you aren't really there?

Rubberbanding

Every since the 1.36.x server got out and Viewer 2.0 beta came along, I've been having some horrible rubberbanding issues with building. Still, I've managed to get the boat almost to the point where I want it. Sadly, there's beed a few other issues as of late: No wonder why I have trouble sleeping.

It's really easy to Edit linked items to make an exploded view of a boat: Now you can see how hollow and cutshaped prims can be used to produce additional surfaces and protrusions so a vehicle looks more interesting. Yeah, I could fire up a texture editor and mess with the textures... takes more effort. Bleh. So, in the end: The two mounting plates are the same prim. The back vents are the same prim, and it's also only 1 prim for the vents in the manifold/engine block thingy. I think I can cheap one more prim out of the system by turning the root prim/script base into the vent, saving a prim. Just gotta keep it the same orientation or the whole boat goes wacky.

Done. And used the extra prim for the back end of the boat. Looks good.
